I am a graphic designer turned visual journalist. Since 2021, I have been working at the Swiss daily, Neue Zürcher Zeitung. In my position, I collaborate closely with exceptional journalists on visual investigations, breaking news coverage, data-driven news stories and visually engaging features.
As a member of both the Visuals and International desks, my primary responsibility is to deliver high-quality, visual news stories on international affairs to our online readers. My work involves conducting extensive research and handling various data types, ranging from government statistics to exclusive data sets and geographical information. Based on this research, I create maps, data visualizations, and infographics to effectively communicate complex topics to our audience. I also take the lead in developing new interactive storytelling formats, overseeing a team of coders, correspondents, and photojournalists in the production of these stories.
My past work experience and educational background have equipped me with the skills to work across multiple media types, platforms, and devices. My journey into the realm of visual media started with a passion for photography which later evolved into a passion for cinematography. After high school, I interned at two documentary film companies, Mira Film and Point de Vue in Basel, Switzerland. Subsequently, I pursued a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication at the Zurich University of the Arts. There, I acquired fundamental knowledge in typography, editorial design, and branding. Next to my studies, I continued to freelance as a video journalist.
After completing my studies, I transitioned from print to screen: I interned at Interactive Things and worked as an interaction designer at the environmental consultancy firm EBP in Zurich. These experiences exposed me to various communicative challenges within the public sector and fueled my passion for conveying complex topics through information visualization. This, in turn, led me to pursue a master’s degree in Information Design at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.
