Story lead and maps for a visual explainer

In the wake of Turkey’s devastating 2023 earthquake, the country faces the monumental task of clearing over 200 million tons of rubble. The article explores how Turkey is tackling this challenge, from steel extraction to the separation of hazardous materials.

Through infographics, maps, photographs, and satellite data analysis, we show the extent of the destruction and explain the complex process of debris removal and recycling. We also use satellite images to identify large debris dumps that are likely harming the environment. The article emphasises how proper recycling of the rubble not only prevents further damage but also plays a crucial role in rebuilding the region.
