How visual journalism can engage news consumers

Talk, C'est La Viz Conference, Utrecht, The Netherlands, Friday, November 15, 2024

The conference «C'est La Viz» brings together information design practitioners and data visualization specialists to reflect on approaches to better understand and communicate data.

My talk will focus on how we can use visual storytelling to engage news consumers. For that, I invite the audience to join me on a day as a visual journalist at the Swiss daily «Neue Zürcher Zeitung».

Together, we will discuss which news stories we want to run, hunt for data, and decide how best to communicate this information to a broad audience using a variety of visual media. Using real-life examples from my own work, we'll explore how our visualization skills can help news readers engage with complex issues like the climate crisis and comprehend intractable international issues, such as the Middle East conflict.

Due to technical issues with the slides, I'll be uploading them on Monday, November 18.
