Tracking the war in Ukraine

Concept, map design and user interface design for an interactive online map

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was the first war to be tracked and analysed by millions over social media and public satellite imagery. To provide our readers with an up-to-date, visual overview of the situation, we launched an interactive map. It shows events that are important to the verlauf of the war, terretorial concessions, and troupe presence. Articles from NZZ-correspondets are also visible on the map. Readers can interact with the map by clicking on events for more information, pan and zooming, and by going thorugh the invasion day by day via the timeline. The map is updated daily with verified information. An extensive article below the map explains the methodology behind the data.

The map was launched a day after the first Russian attacks on 24 Februrary, 2022. In the first two weeks of the invasion the map was visited by millions of people. On average, our readers returned twice daily to check the current sitation. Months into the war, the map is still one of the most read articles on the nzz.ch.
